CPSC Recalls Children’s Outerwear

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued official recalls for children’s outerwear. Kids’ waterproof hooded rain ponchos from Wealers Outdoor LLC of Airmont, NY, and imported by JW Crawford Inc. of Monroe, NY, have a drawstring that can catch on slides, handrails, school bus doors and other objects, posing a strangulation hazard. No injuries have been reported at the time of this writing.

Also recalled are Baby B’Gosh quilted jackets imported by OshKosh B’Gosh Inc. of Atlanta. The jacket snaps can detach, posing a choking hazard. So far, OshKosh has received three reports of detachment, including one incident where a child put the detached snap in her mouth.

No ASI-listed companies were named in the recall.

The ponchos, manufactured in China, were sold in clear, red and blue, in packs of six and 12. They measure 40” tall by 60” wide and have a white nylon drawstring attached to the neck. The words “One size fits all” and “Made in China” are printed on the front of the packaging. Approximately 1,300 ponchos were sold at www.amazon.com and www.wealers.com from May 2016 through July 2016 for about $12 for a pack of six and $17 for a pack of 12.

The CPSC asks consumers to take the ponchos away from children and either remove the drawstring or return the intact poncho to Wealers Outdoor for a full refund. JW Crawford is available at (844) 222-2812 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday ET or at recall.jwcrawford@gmail.com. The style and UPC numbers are printed on the care tag sewn inside the garment. An estimated 38,000 were sold in the U.S., and about 5,000 in Canada, at OshKosh, Bon-Ton, Kohl’s, Fred Meyer and other retail stores. Items sold online at www.oshkosh.com. The products were on sale from August 2017 to September 2017 for between $35 and $40.

Consumers who bought the quilted jackets are advised to take them away from children and return them to any OshKosh or Carter’s store for a $34 gift card for an infant size or $36 gift card for a toddler size.
