A British museum exhibit offers a dazzling glimpse into the 50-year-long career of renowned textile artist Kaffe Fassett.

“The Colorful World of Kaffe Fassett” at the American Museum in Bath, England, showcases more than 100 works by the 76-year-old artist. Knitwear, needlepoint, beading and quilts share a place with vibrant mosaics and still-life paintings, all in a riot of color and texture.

“Hopefully, this will banish the fear of color,” Fassett tells The New York Times. “People are dressing in gray and beige, but they’ll come here and see that there’s mileage to be had from absolutely passionate pools of color.”

Fassett, an American, moved to the U.K. in the early 1960s and was inspired by the American Museum’s diverse collections, especially its many antique quilts, calling the textiles on display “a particular delight.”

Fassett began his career as a painter and illustrator, but soon became enthralled by the hand-dyed woolen yarns he discovered on a trip to Scotland. After persuading a traveling companion to teach him to knit, Fassett immersed himself in the world of textiles, not seeing a distinction between art and craft. “I always try to make my textiles as beautiful as I can manage, imbuing them with all the efforts of a work of art,” he says.

The Fassett exhibit will be on display through November 2014.
