Swimwear will surely inspire this season. Designs and styles are innovative and daring, and reference everything from Bollywood fashion to men’s 1960s surfer culture.
For women, embellishment is queen. Monika Rene, customer service representative at Bishop Garment Co. (asi/40585), says, “Swimwear in 2014 is all about accents and features a variety of embroidered detailing and gilded hardware, making this year’s suits more glamorous than ever,” she says. Additionally she details a few other types of embellishments: “This year’s trends focus on crochet, strings and fringe. Crochet makes for a bohemian beach look, perfect for free-spirited fashionistas,” she says. “String accents are a standout style. Finally, fringes will remain in full force in 2014, but they’ll be bigger and bolder – and they’ll certainly take center stage.”
For men, shorter board shorts are in considerable vogue. Stan Rudman, owner of Sportailor Inc. (asi/88796), says this resizing is adhering to retro trends. “We’re seeing a return to the original volley length, with a 16” outseam,” he says. “Board-short lengths are shorter now because they’re tying back to retro styles, which are bigger than ever and here to stay. But, longer shorts will always be in style.”
