Fashion Forward

British embroidery atelier, Hand & Lock (www.handembroidery.com), is getting into the fashion game on its own terms. The 247-year-old embroidery experts with close links to the Royal Family have been tasked in recent years with providing specialist work for design houses like Christian Dior, Mary Katranzou, Louis Vuitton, Alexander McQueen and Stella McCartney. Now, Hand & Lock is sending its own looks down the runway with its spring 2015 debut fashion collection, “The Radicalisation of Nadia.”

The collection, made in partnership with Steven Sheldon of Sheldon Hall, shows the versatility of embroidery, according to Jessica Jane, production director at Hand & Lock. “We still work in a very traditional way, but this collection shows the classic embroidery techniques can be used to produce contemporary streetwear as well as embellished ball gowns,” she says.

Since February, Hand & Lock embroiderers spent more than 2,000 hours creating and embellishing the collection. The pieces range in value from 2,000 to 7,000 pounds, and will eventually be put on permanent display at the Central London atelier.
