IBIS World’s 2015 Global Handbag and Purse Manufacturing Market Research Report shows a surge in demand for these accessories worldwide. The segment earns $106 billion in revenue with an annual average growth rate of 2.2%.

The trend hits close to home as well. According to Stitches’ 2015 State of the Industry, 60% of decorators sold bags last year. Counselor magazine’s 2015 State of the Industry report puts bags in second place only to T-shirts as the most widely sold promotional product.

Why so popular? R.B. Lahoti, CEO of Richie Bags & Fashions, cites the many ways consumers use bags – groceries, the beach, fashion. He names leading fashion magazines, cosmetic brands, multinational banks, pharmaceutical companies, book publishers and wineries among the types of businesses that have used a Richie bag for promotion. Any bag can be customized from the wide fabric selection including cotton canvas, twill, jute, herringbone and so on. Performance features make these bags even more popular. “Recently, we’ve developed bags in odorless, soft, fire-retardant, water-resistant and organic fabrics,” Lahoti says.

The trend watchers at Accessoriesmagazine.com highlight bright, bold totes of all sizes. Take inspiration from this Richie bag with a bold red anchor accented with fun rope handles. Use materials such as Floriani Commercial’s Appli-Stitch Velvet appliqué fabric to create a bright, textural element on a plain canvas bag for that graphic pop of color.
